GREETINGS AND WELCOME TO THE VEHS WEB SITE.

Newsletter for Voyageurs Expeditionary High School

February 1, 2010

Dear Parents/Guardians of VEHS students

February is already here, wow this year has sped by quickly.  Historically, February in Minnesota schools is also the start of the “testing” season and this year is no different. We are starting the process of helping students prepare for the upcoming mandated state Graduation tests in Reading and Math. All 11th grade students are participating in a six week Math test prep class with Paul Johnson, and all 10th grade students are working with Cindy Nelson in preparing for the Reading test.  Please encourage your student to be in school and do their best to prepare for these very important tests.  All students who attend a public school in Minnesota are required to take and pass these tests in order to earn a diploma from any public school district.

Attendance at school has been a concern.  Please remember that Voyageurs has an attendance policy and that too many absences can affect your students’ ability to earn credit towards graduation.  We will continue to work with the county officials to report truancy issues for those students under the age of 16 who have excessive, unexcused absences.

As you may have read in the Bemidji Pioneer last week, Voyageurs was given approval by the Joint Planning Board Committee to proceed with our plans to relocate to the old Kobilka’s site on the north end of town on Bemidji Avenue.  We are excited about moving to a newer building, better designed to meet our needs.  We will have outdoor space for activities such as basketball, dodgeball, and indoor spaces such as a shop class; a better designed art room and better technology access.  We are working with MJ Architect’s to finalize the design for the building and hopefully will have a floor plan available for viewing by Parent/Teacher conferences later this month.

Parent/Teacher conferences are scheduled for February 25 from 12:00-5:30 p.m. At 5:30 p.m. we will serve a pizza supper and invite parents and community members to participate in a Love and Logic Parenting Workshop from 5:30-7:00 p.m.

Below is the calendar of events for this month:
Thursday, February 11th & Friday, February 12th – NO SCHOOL – Staff Development Days
Monday, February 15th – NO SCHOOL – President’s Day
Thursday, February 18th – 4:30 p.m. – Regular School Board Meeting
Thursday, February 25 – NO SCHOOL – Parent/Teacher Conferences; Love & Logic Parenting Workshop
Friday, February 26 – NO SCHOOL – Staff Development

You should have received your child’s progress report for 3rd Hex. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your student’s advisor.  As always, my door is open to visit if you want to stop by.

Respectfully submitted,
